If you already have a Bachelor’s degree in something other than Computer Science (CS), you may find yourself wanting to get that formal CS education. But where to start? Many websites want you to sign up to receive more information, and that leaves you susceptible to spam calls from recruiters. What programs are the best out there? What are the most reputable? In this article I will list three programs that are fantastic for people with a degree outside of Computer Science to go and get a formal CS education.

The best thing you can do for yourself when looking at graduate programs is to do some introspection and ask yourself what it is you want to obtain from your hard work, time, and money you're about to invest. Do you want the credential? A career change? Boost your odds of admission into a Ph.D. program? Whichever the case may be, it is important to make a decision based on what is best for you. Do not make a choice based on what is easiest to get into. It's too much money, effort, and time to spend on something that may not get you closer to your goal. Take time to set that goal.

Oregon State University

Oregon State University’s E-Campus (online campus) offers a Post-Baccalaureate in Computer Science. This is first in my list because it is a full-blown B.S. in Computer Science, the degree will state “Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science from Oregon State University.” There is no mention that it is an online degree. At $527 a unit, requiring 60 units (2-years) to graduate, OSU will run a total of approximately $31,620 for the whole degree.

Personally I feel that OSU is a great option for Bachelor’s of Arts degree (B.A.) holders. The minimum math prerequisite requirement for applying to OSU is college algebra or pre-calculus. If you are a B.A. holder, odds are you have done college algebra and qualify to apply. Most other post-bacc programs will want you to have taken Calculus 1 or higher, so OSU is extra appealing in this regard.
